Dawsons Height's
A modernist social housing estate built in 1964 and designed by Kate Macintosh, DH sits like a benign monument on the South London skyline. It is possibly, one of my favourite buildings in London.
The staggering of its block sections creates ever changing silhouettes. Golden hour throws angular shadows onto its surroundings, adding the beauty of surprise to a relentless suburb.
Being in its presence makes you feel small, humbled, protected. The the warm brick texture humanising the facades. The echo of voices weaving their way from the inner courtyard and out through the openings in the exterior facing walls, like an enormous speaker. As you sit on the grass bank and look back over the city you feel guarded, sheltered.
I recorded one of my summer evening trips to the hill.
